Italian Red WineAbbruzzo
In a nation of myriad appellations, the Abruzzi offers wine drinkers rare and refreshing
simplicity. There are only two DOCs and precious few unclassified wines of note in a region
that is two-thirds mountains and one-third hills with highly favourable natural conditions for
grapevines.
2007, Montepulciano Valle Reale
58Campania
The ancient Romans considered Campania Felix to be the "non plus ultra" of wine regions.
They favoured the vineyards along the coast north of Naples where Falernum, the most
treasured wine of the empire, was grown. They also lauded the wines of Vesuvius and the hills
of Avellino. The Greeks, too, recognised the privileged nature of the place, introducing vines
which still stand out today in Aglianico and Greco.
2004, Taurasi Riserva "Il Vicario", d'Antiche Terre
75Emilia Romagna
Emilia-Romagna's wines might be considered northern Italy's odd lots, different on the whole
from the neighbours', often facile in style, but nearly always refreshingly individualistic. As the
hyphenated name reveals, the region consists of two distinct sectors which coincide more or
less at the capital of Bologna.

50Marche
The Marche region lies level with Tuscany on the eastern coast, the other side of the Appenine
Hills. They are one of the largest most innovative wine producers in Italy, with a huge range of
wines, and an even larger array of medals and awards.
2006, Rosso Conero DOC ‘Piancarda’, Garofoli
58Puglia
During the period of the Roman Empire, the production and the commerce of Apulian wine
were particularly lively and the wines of Puglia were appreciated in Rome. With the construction
of the port of Brindisi, in the 244 a.c., the commerce of Apulian wines had a flourishing period
and Puglia, during the Roman period, was nicknamed the "wine cellar of Italy" for the great
quantities of wine produced.
2008, Primitivo ‘Gold Label’, Ugo Zanier
59Umbria
Umbria’s winemaking history can be traced back to the Benedictine monks, who were the first
to plant vineyards in the calcareous clay and sandy soil that extends over much of the region.
A land-locked area in the heart of Italy, Umbria has a climate and geography similar to
Tuscany’s, with cold, rainy winters and dry sun-filled summers. An exception is the area
surrounding Lake Trasimeno and Lake Bolsena, where a mild, Mediterranean mezoclimate
dominates.
2007, Montefalco Rosso, Colpetrone
69Toscana
This is the home of not only six of the country's DOCG wines, but also the birthplace of the
IGT Super Tuscans. The hilly countryside, with altitudes of up to 500 metres, provides some of
Italy's finest wines. These hills offer aspects that allow the grapes to express the best varietal
characteristics.
From Brunello and Vino Nobile to Chianti itself, Sangiovese has its true home in Tuscany. Since
the late 60s, we have seen the introduction of international grape varieties, along with the new
wine making tecniques. italian have been at the for front of pioneering new styles of wine, such
as the Super Tuscan.Toscana’s Proprietory Blends

889Chianti
In addition to splendid landscapes, Chianti's popularity is also directly tied to its fine red wines
produced in the region and known generally as Chianti wine. The Chianti region, extending
roughly over the two main city provinces of Florence and Siena, is characterized by a
combination of almost perfect weather and soil that produces a precious wine considered
one of the best wines around the world.
The tradition of cultivating vines in Chianti goes back a long time in history, back to the
Etruscans that inhabited the area before the Roman empire.

Brunello di Montalcino (broo NEL lo dee mon tal CHEE no) is a red Italian wine produced in
the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino located about 70 miles (110 km) southwest
of Florence in the Tuscany wine region. Brunello, roughly translated as "nice dark one" in the
local dialect, is the unofficial name of the clone of Sangiovese (also known as Sangiove Grosso)
grown in the Montalcinoarea. In 1980, the Brunello di Montalcino was awarded the first
Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation and today is one
of Italy's best-known wines.Rosso di Montalcino

Montepulciano, is a renaissance town in Southern Tuscany and an important agricultural center,
famous for it's "Nobile" wine. Montepulciano lies on a hilltop in a panoramic position and is
surrounded by the 15th century defensive works by "Antonio da Sangallo". Birthplace of the famous
poet Agnolo Ambrogini, called "Poliziano". Thanks to its history throughout the
centuries, the town has preserved many architectural jewels and artistic treasures along side
the natural beauty of the

69Piemonte
wine is the range of Italian wines made in the province of Piedmont in the
northwestern corner of Italy. The most well known wines from the region include Barolo and
Barbaresco. They are made from the Nebbiolo grape. These wines are ideal for ageing and a
well-aged Barolo for instance may leave a feeling of drinking velvet because the tannins are
polished and integrated more and more into the wine. As the wine matures the colour becomes
more brownish and rust-red.
Other popular grapes used for red wine production are Barbera and Dolcetto. Wine made
on the Barbera grape is often fruity and delicate with less tannin than wine made from the
Nebbiolo grape. Dolcetto on the other side, is not as the name indicates sweet (dolce is Italian
for sweet). The grape gives fresh and dry red wines with some tannin. The wines made on the
Dolcetto grape should be consumed young or with lighter fare.Barbera

Barolo wines are derived from the Nebbiolo grape and produced in Italy's Piedmont
region. This is truly one of the world's best red wines and is an example of a wine that
gets better and better with age.

is a wine region in north-eastern Italy, one of a group of three highly productive Italian
regions known collectively as the Venezie (after the ancient Venetian Republic) and the biggest
DOC producer of the three. Although the Venezie collectively produce more red wine than white,
the Veneto region produces more whites under DOC and is home to the famous Soave wines.
The region is protected from the harsh northern European climate by the Alps, the foothills of
which form the Veneto's northern extremes. These cooler climes are well-suited to white varieties
like Garganega (the main grape for Soave wines) while the warmer Adriatic coastal plains and
river valleys are where the renowned Valpolicella, Amarone and Bardolino DOC reds are
produced. Veneto's growers are among the most modernised in Italy. While most of the 'classic'
wines from this area are based on native grape varieties like Prosecco and Verduzzo, high demand
for Veneto wines in the European and North American markets has galvanized the region's
producers into experimentation with Cabernets, Chardonnay and Pinot varieties, among
others.Veneto Valpolicella

53Amarone della Valpolicella,
usually known as Amarone, is a typically rich Italian dry red
wine made from the partially dried grapes of the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara varieties.
The wine was awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in December 1990.
On 4 December 2009, Amarone and Recioto della Valpolicella were promoted to the status of
Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG).
The final result is a very ripe, raisiny, full-bodied wine with very little acid. Alcohol content easily
surpasses 15% (the legal minimum is 14%) and the resulting wine is rarely released until five
years after the vintage, even though this is not a legal requirement.
Amarone to begin with just the colour is amazing, a deep intense, ruby red. The aromas are just
as strong and powerful, rich and fruity, along with aromas of red berries and spices. Drinking
this wine is the pinnacle of the whole experience. It is intense, rich, luscious, and fruity. It is also
very smooth and velvety while at the same time quite thick, and unbelievably complex!!Amarone

85It is the Chateau d'Yquem of Italy, absent the grandeur. It is the coveted gem of the Boot,
but does not bear the prestigious name Sassicaia. It is a legendary winery, without an estate.
Its bottles are identified by hand scripted labels that provide a glimpse into the heart and soul
of the world’s truest artisanal winemaker.
It is Quintarelli!Known as "the Master of the Veneto," Giuseppe Quintarelli makes some of the world’s most
sought-after wines. From aperitifs to digestifs, his limited production Amarones, Reciotos, and
Valpolicellas are the benchmark for excellence (along with Dal Forno, Veneto's other legendary
producer). Their greatness stems from the inherent quality of the terroir and natural talent of
this master, whose concept of vintage approval and strict grape selection rival the great Chateau
of Sauternes. Giuseppe puts his wines on the market when he deems them ready, often keeping
them in the cellar for decades until the right moment arrives.Primofiore 2005

810Quintarelli's Alzero is one of Italy's most unique, compelling wines,
particularly in top vintages,
in which it can be utterly mind-blowing. Alzero is mostly Cabernet Franc, with a dollop of
Merlot, made Amarone-style. The 1998 reveals compelling layers of ripe dark fruit, sweet herbs,
chocolate and spices that gradually unfurl in the glass.
It isn't easy to keep up with Giuseppe Quintarelli, as this legendary producer releases his
wines when he feels they are ready, not a moment sooner. As is often the case, these are
some of the most mind-blowing wines being made anywhere, but sadly, prices are equally
dizzying. Still, for readers who can afford them, these are reference-point wines.
